Creating ELA & Math that instills pride in African-American students

This year, I had the honor of working on the Black Student Achievement Program curriculum for the state of California. The goal was to create interactive learning for virtual tutoring sessions in a small group, tutor-led format.  Working with a team of Common Core standards experts and instructors, I helped envision and design a 4-unit, 10-week, 30-lesson curriculum for grades 3 through high school. The curriculum emphasizes four pillars: Academic Success, Leadership Development, College Participation, and Community Development.

We applied project-based learning to bring to life ELA and Math standards, anchoring the learning in culturally responsive engagement, to create inspiring and enriching experiences within an elevated mini-lesson framework. Students are ignited, from designing learning blocks using rectangular prisms to multiplying equal groups through beats per measure in Hip-Hop. The lessons are specifically designed for small group tutoring sessions, and we provided scripts, best practices, informal and formal assessments, and colorful, engaging PowerPoint slides.

By leveraging digital tools such as whiteboards, journals, and breakout rooms, we created an engaging and effective accelerated learning experience.

The integrated literacy component, which dives into a diverse range of literature and mini field trips, is one of the most exciting features. The outcome is tangible student projects, ongoing journals, and enriched reading that builds on the lessons taught.
